Fathom agent Norma Harrington, whose family has deep roots in military service, has discovered a way to give back to her country and her community as a member of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders.
A veteran of the real estate industry and a member of the Fathom – Greater Denton County team for four years, Harrington and her husband, Tom, volunteer with the Patriot Guard Riders at the funeral services of military members and first responders whose families request their participation.
Patriot Guard Riders, many arriving on their motorcycles and wearing black vests, are an impressive sight. “We stand a flag line in silence as the funeral begins to render honors… after which flags are pulled and re-installed at the graveside, where we remain at attention beside our flags until the burial service is completed,” Harrington said.
While the group is best known for its motorcycle-riding members, riding is not a requirement to join the group and participate, Harrington explained. She is a non-riding member while her husband owns and rides two motorcycles, a Harley Davidson and a Triumph. He is a Team Captain in the group.
Harrington’s desire to honor members of the military can be traced to her own family history. Harrington was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and came to the United States in 1956 at the age of seven. Her father was a Gordon Highlander in the Scottish Army, was captured in France during World War II, and was marched through Germany, where he spent six years as a prisoner of war. Her mother was in the Women’s Air Force in Scotland. Harrington’s father-in-law also served in the military in the WWII-era through the 1960s. He retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army.
“I have always been proud of their collective service and appreciate what they and thousands of others have and continue to do to ensure our freedom and safety,” Harrington said.
Patriot Guard Riders present all families with a framed certificate. Photos of the services are later sent to family members, Harrington said.
Patriot Guard Riders in the North Texas region cover more than 180 square miles, including the counties of Archer, Bosque, Clay, Collin, Comanche and Cooke.
Since 2009, the Harringtons have lived on a ranch, where they care for long-horn cattle and horses.
