In this Fathom Realty Agent Spotlight, we introduce you to Deba Douglas, a passionate real estate professional dedicated to making a difference in her community. After witnessing housing disparities among her students as an Assistant Principal in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Deba was inspired to actively pursue a career in real estate to contribute to change. She founded Douglas Dwellings, a venture to remodel properties in low-income areas to provide better living standards and empower families with a sense of worth. Why did you pursue a real estate career? 

My motivation for pursuing a career in real estate stemmed from my prior experiences as an Assistant Principal in the DFW area. Witnessing the stark housing disparities among my students made me realize that change was necessary, and I could be part of that change. I decided to actively contribute by buying properties, particularly in low-income areas, and remodeling them to offer better living standards. The idea was to foster a sense of worth in every family that they deserved the best, regardless of where they lived. This was the birth of Douglas Dwellings.

When and why did you join Fathom Realty?

I joined Fathom in October 2019 because I was searching for a brokerage to work around my work schedule, guide me, and support me with one-on-one mentorship. I was looking for a cloud-based brokerage because I had a very hectic life with my family, and I wanted something that would support my needs as a REALTOR® and not overwhelm me as I was learning something new. I was drawn to Fathom because of its integrity and values. I met Josh Harley at our new REALTOR® orientation; he was a gem. He spoke from his heart, and he is such a servant leader that I wanted to be a part of something that was going to be greater than myself. I just love Fathom!

What advice can you give someone just starting a real estate career?

My advice for anyone starting a real estate career would be to approach it with empathy and a desire to make a difference. Remember, real estate isn’t just about transactions; it’s about creating homes and influencing lives. Think about how you can add value to your community through your work.

Can you elaborate on how you developed your passion for investing and wealth management and your goals for educating other agents?

My passion for investing was ignited when I bought my first duplex. Through my experiences in remodeling and managing properties, I understood the value of intelligent investments. In addition to acquiring and refurbishing properties, I provide solutions to families facing foreclosure, thereby managing wealth for myself and others in the community. I aim to extend this knowledge to other real estate agents, nurturing their abilities to become successful investors.

Are there other interests you would like to tell us about, for example, membership in local REALTORS® boards, hobbies, community service, your family, or other activities? 

I am a part of my local REALTOR® Association. I love serving in my church – Shoreline City in Dallas, Texas. I enjoy traveling with my family and reading a good leadership book!
