The focal point of this collaborative effort was the heartwarming story of Miss Odellia, a long-time Plano resident who epitomized resilience and strength in the face of personal challenges. A widow battling cancer, Miss Odellia’s story came to light through the City of Plano’s compassionate attention. Habitat for Humanity had approved her for comprehensive home repairs, and the community’s involvement through Fathom Serves would prove instrumental in realizing this project.
A Barn Demolition and a Shared Mission
The project started with a significant task: demolishing a barn in Miss Odellia’s backyard, where her late husband had stored his collectibles. The barn’s demolition was not merely a physical task but a symbol of transformation, rejuvenation, and support for a fellow community member in need. With the barn emptied and awaiting its transformation, the event from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. saw a flurry of activity.
Eight volunteers representing Fathom Realty rallied to tear down the barn, systematically stacking materials by size for more effortless curbside pickup. The camaraderie and shared sense of purpose were palpable as materials were loaded onto waiting trucks and trailers. Some volunteers even journeyed to the Plano Dump, utilizing the city’s free dump services for the project. This collaborative effort saved resources and exemplified the potential of united action in achieving impactful goals.

She eloquently shared, “What an amazing event that allows us to give back to the community we work and live in. Habitat helps families maintain their homes or build brand-new homes from the ground up for qualified residents. These home services are done with the help of volunteers. By using volunteers, we do not have to raise the $1,300.00 that it would cost minimum to have this done,”
