An ambitious federal program that has significantly improved the lives of low-income communities is about to celebrate a major milestone. In 2024, we will mark the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, a testament to its enduring impact.

Goals of the program

The CDBG’s goal since 1974 has been to provide funds for housing, plumbing and sewer systems, educational centers, and other infrastructure that improve the quality of life for residents of low- and moderate-income communities. It provides grants in cities of 50,000 or more and counties with 200,000 or more residents. The CDBG program has helped to provide quality, low-cost housing and prevent urban blight.

CDBP also funds disaster relief projects, such as building an early childhood educational center in a tornado-ravaged city.

Residents of CDBP communities

Examples of residents in CDBP beneficiary communities who often live with low to moderate incomes are:

  • The elderly.
  • The homeless.
  • Battered spouses.
  • Abused children.
  • The handicapped.
  • Migrant workers.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the CDBG program, we celebrate its many achievements and the countless residents who have benefited from its initiatives over the years. Congratulations to the CDBG and all those who have contributed to its success!
